Wynell,
My grandfather was from the same area. His father had been married to a full-blooded Cherokee woman. On top of that, my g-father married Ida Mae Davis, southern woman who always claimed to be a direct descendent of Jefferson Davis. I will try to provide more detail, but there is quite a bit of mystery surrounding my greatgrandfather.
