North Georgia News (Murray Co. GA)Thursday, May 16, 1889:
"Caught And Caged--- John Chadawick, a boy about 17 years of age, who has been employed at Hill’s sawmill in Whitfield County for several months, was passing through Murray on last Tuesday, enroute to see some relatives who live near Carter’s Quarter. While passing the home of Billie Terry four below town, he found a coat and vest hanging on the fence, which he appropriated to his own use. In the pockets was a one dollar bill, a pocket knife and silk handkerchief, which he didn’t think to leave with Mr. Terry. John passed through town, took a game of marbles with the boys, and went out a mile from town and stopped with some relatives, where he was arrested on the same evening. He waived examination and Esq. Heartsill ordered him to jail. He says it is the first act of the kind of his life and will be the last one. He entered the jail with tears in his eyes and is very penitent over his transgression. He says his father is in Kentucky and his mother in North Carolina. He is a good looking boy and well dressed. “The ways of the transgressor are hard.”
