Please share any information you may have on this Matthew Zuill. He was a merchant in Wicomico and St Stephens Parish, Northumberland County, VA. Not proven, but he may have been connected to the Brown Zuill Merchants of Liverpool, England. The following John Adams was my 5-great-grandfather. From the book Records of Indentured Servants and of Certificates for Land Northumberland County, Virginia by W. Preston Haynie: #1720. 14 April 1740---On the Petition of John Adams, servant of Matthew Zuill gent., seting forth that he was free, the court haveing considered the same order that the sd John Adams return to his master’s service & serve him till ye Nineteeth day of April next & pay Costs. OB 1737-43, 130. This indicates John Adams signed an agreement to serve Matthew Zuill for 5 years in 1736 and gained his freedom in 1741. Thank you, Jim Adams |
