Apparently I never responded to your question. Sorry for the delay. My family comes from Hockenheim (c. 15 km SW of Heidelberg) and surrounding towns. I have two ZAHNs (both were butchers by profession) who were born in Schwetzingen and moved to NY in the mid to late 1800s. Both were single, so I can't match them precisely to anyone in the NY censuses. I suspect two people in the Manhattan censuses are my ZAHNs, but I can't be certain.
