Act for Dividing the County of Russell into Two Distinct Counties (passed Oct
25, 1792).

This petition was printed in the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc., 1992 publication: "Bicentennial History of Lee County Virginia, 1792-1992," Chapter 1: Formation of Lee County Overview, p. 1-2; submitted by Bashie Kinkaid of Rose Hill VA. The petition has listed as signatories: William and David YEARY, who are 2 of my ancestors. There is a GEORGE YEARY also on the list of signors, but I think that whoever transcribed the document saw the name 'George YERIAN' and assumed that the name should have been YEARY, thus entered the name as 'George YEARY.'. I have not seen a copy of the original document myself, so this is just a 'gut' feeling. We have no precedent for the use of the personal name 'George' among the YEARY men of that time, so I am not convinced that this surname should NOT have been transcribed as YERIAN.

There is a tax record of 1815 of George Yerion in Wythe County: One farm on Reed Creek adjoining James McGavock, 168 acres having thereon one "cabben," kitchen, smoke house, barn, and still house, corn crib, valued at $600." [p. 155, Southwest Virginia Tax Assessments, 1815-Grayson, Lee, Scott, Russell, Washington, and Wythe Counties; compiled by Mary Kegley].
