Below is my last request for information that I sent yesterday to the AFHRA and I'm still waiting on a response. I did notice the problems that you mentioned with the Form 66-1 and thought that something doesn't look "correct". The 8th Fighter Group was assigned to the 5th AAF based in the South Pacific area out of New Guinea. Don't believe that any units assigned to 8th FG participated in Gaudalcanal. The AAF was pretty good at giving credit for aerial victories and I find it strange that Lt Wells who joined the fight with many other planes and supposedly shot down 4 aircraft but was not given credit for even one aerial victory.

This is my last attempt to find the above General Orders concerning Lt William D. Wells. After doing further research on the history of the Guadalcanal air combat of June 16,1943 and corresponding with others we have concluded that Lt Wells was most likely attached to the 18th Fighter Group and assigned to one of its fighter squadrons, ie the 12th Fighter Squadron, 44th Fighter Squadron or the 70th Fighter Squadron.
I know that you are probably tired of trying to find out about him but I hope that you can try this one last time to check the General Orders of the mentioned units to see if there is anything about him.
