Robert emailed me the documents and I forwarded them to the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) and below is their response. Their research was for the 347th Fighter Group and its assigned Fighter Squadrons. Now that William's research suggest that it might have been the 18th Fighter Group that gives us another area to look at.

AFHRA response:

Mr Andrews,

I researched HRA's sources for WWII Aerial Victory Credits (AVC) and do not
find William D. Wells listed in any of them. I also researched the histories
of 67 Fighter Squadron and 347 Fighter Group for Jun 1943 and do not find a
mission for 16 Jun 1943. I searched 13 Air Force and War Department (WD)
General Orders (GO) for Jun-Nov 1943 and I found nothing.
HRAs resources include a listing of AVC by unit and during June 1943, 67 FS
only has AVC on 3 Jun 1943. 347 FG has no AVC for Jun 1943.

I am at a loss and do not know where to search for more information.

The article you enclosed called Capt Wells an "Airacobra Ace"; however, that
is not an official term. Persons who shot down five aircraft were called
"Aces" but the Airacobra Ace sounds like a term journalists came up with.

I checked my AVC folders on individuals and discovered that someone had
already sent me the documents you attached.

I am sorry that I could not find information to support the information you
sent.

Ms. Robertson,
Do you know if you can find any information on Lt. (later Captain) William
D. Wells based on the attached documents. He may have been attached to the
67th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group, 13th AAC/AAF but not certain.
Thank you,
Darryl Andrews

Mr Andrews,

USAFHRA is the agency that maintains Air Force Aerial Victory Credits for WWI through Viet Nam.

I searched for Lt William D. Wells in WWII Aerial Victory Credit (AVC) listing and individual record cards and did not find his name. I also searched in 68 Fighter Squadron and 347 Fighter Group histories for Jun 1943 and did not find anything on a 17 Jun 1943 mission and no mention of his name. I also searched 13 Air Force general orders and there was not a GO-341.

I do not know where to suggest you look further. Unless he was not assigned to 68 FS. But he is not listed in HRAs AVC at all.

I am sorry that I could not find anything for you.
