BAD JUDGEMENT CALLS
Entering the Mediterranean,Convoy UGS-38 suffered from a rash of bad judgement calls, to include the "FRIENDLY PLANES - DO NOT FIRE" order to gunners, which was contributing cause of the loss of over 500 troops being transported aboard a ship laden with 7000 tons of explosives.

SNAKE BIT CONVOY - COMING AND GOING
Leaving the Mediterranean with 107 empty merchant ships,
Convoy GUS-38 was hit by two submarines, damaging two Destroyer Escorts, and sinking one Destroyer Escort, with
loss of life numbering over a hundred, with many wounded.

1. USS Menges DE-320 damaged by Sub U-371 with 21 men KIA
2. Free French Senegalais damaged by Sub U-371 - 49 men KIA
3. USS Fechteler DE-157 sunk by Sub U-957, 29 men KIA
