According to the "U.S. World War II Navy Muster Rolls, 1938-1949" on Ancestry he reported to NAS San Diego April 1, 1941. Serial number 341 43 97, rate AMM1c, enlisted DEC. 16, 1936. Muster Roll for the quarter ending Sept 30, 1941. He is there till last quarter roll dated March 31, 1942. So he was not even in Hawaii on Dec 7th, 1941. Before April 1941 he was stationed at Naval Receiving Station Philadelphia, PA for muster roll quarter ending Dec 31, 1940. Before that he was on the Yorktown (CV-5) for the quarter ending Oct 14, 1940 then he was on the Vestal (AR-4) till quarter ending May 31 1940 then Medusa (AR-1) for quarter ending March 30 1939.

With his service # you might be able to order a copy of his Marine/Navy Service record from the NARA.
