Dear Ms. Mott,
In your question you typed "Am I right in assuming the 17th FAO was a non-divisional unit during the ETO of WWII?" You are correct, the 17th Field Artillery Observational Battalion was a non-divisional unit in the ETO (European Theater of Operation) 1943-45. The 17th Field Artillery Observation Battalion was assigned to V Corps, First Army.
In your question you typed "Also because of this it will be harder to find further information other than what's in their history book?" No. As I type, hundreds of FACTS about the 17th Field Artillery Observation Battalion are before me on my desk & research table, in the unit history of V Corps during WW 2, as well as the 14 volume unit history of First Army during WW 2.
In your question you typed "telling me it's hopeless". No, it certainly is not hopeless for you to obtain FACTS about the 17th Field Artillery Observation Battalion in the ETO during WW 2. The FACTS are there (I found them) in books, for all to read & enjoy.
