Hello, By no means am I an expert. Here is my input and suggestions. Since he survived the war, I don't believe there will be an IDPF (Indivdual Deceased Personnel File) for him. What I might suggest is that you contact the county clerk and/or the State Archives of the State that he settled down in and see if you can get a copy of his discharge papers and enlistment papers (more detail than on the web on that). Service people were encouraged to register them. It should tell you what unit he was first assigned to and the last....possibly the unit he came home with...not his last actual "service" unit. Also, if he had a military burial contact the funeral home and the Sexton of the Cemetery where he is buried to see if they have any records. And more than likely, he received some kind of benefits from the VA? Also, try a VFW association in his area to see if he was a member. I would assume he would have to show them his military records to become a member. I hope some of this helps. Take care.
