My grandfather Alton Rosier Wingate was registered on Jun 5th, 1917 as part of the first selective service registrations. I have virtually no information on his service, and did not know he was a veteran until I ran across his registration card on Ancestry.com. I know where he registered (Colquitt County, GA) and I know that he received a pension. He was also at a VA hospital in Lake City, FL when he died in 1972, and may have been a resident at a veteran's home.
I'd like to find out where he served. I don't even know if he left the country, but I would assume, since he received a pension, and because there was such a need for able-bodied men that he would have been sent over.
I feel completely overwhelmed by the search, and have had a hard time getting information.
Can someone send me in the right direction?
Note: I have no one in my family to ask.
