This house was on state route 649 near Glyn Lynn. I found a report at the Library of Virginia with a 1937 map and the location for the home. I have driven this road several times looking for the old home place because the family is buried across the road from the home.
The book you refer to was published in 1978 and I suspect the home was demolished sometime afterwards.
James McClaugherty owned land on both sides of the New River and petitioned the Giles Commissioners to keep his all his lands in Giles County and not put the home place in Mercer County, VA (the New River is a logical county boundry). This was out of a desire for efficency and economy, he did not want to pay taxes to 2 counties. Others report this has to do with the Civil War, but we know from records he was long dead when the war broke out.
