I am trying to trace my grandfather (Charles Wingfield) lineage. He is the son of Clemon Wingfield. I belief our family may trace back to the slaves of Jamestown VA. Our family oral history states that my great grandfather Clemon may have been mixed (listed as a malatoe). He was murdered while he was attending college in South Carolina. He would have been enrolled in the early 1800s since my grandfather was born in 1915. That means he had to be educated and attending the University of South Carolina with white men since the first black colleges were not founded yet during his college age years.
My Grandfather was raised in Doughtery County, GA. Some of the first settlers of this area were from South Carolina as well.
