I found a postcard which my grandmother received on Oct. 24, 1910. It was from a young woman named Nellie, living in Winnebago. The postcard shows the young woman in what appears to be a nurse's uniform of the time: A striped, long-sleeved shirtwaist dress with white stand-up collar, with a white apron over it. (Could also be a hotel maid's uniform, I suppose, or a cook.) The postcard reads, in part, "This is the way I look when I'm at work..." It's signed "Nellie, Winnebago."
My grandmother, Jean Smith, was born in 1882 and raised in Burnett Co., Wisconsin. She later moved to Washington state and married Pembroke Stice. I wonder if this Nellie may be Nellie B. Benson, who was born in Burnett Co. in 1886 and who had a sister named Marta E. Benson, born in 1884. I know that my grandmother boarded in Grantsburg to attend school, so perhaps that's how the girls knew each other.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.
