Dear Wendy, If your stepfather had any relatives alive in 1881 and you send me the details I will check the 1881 census. Whittalls were quite scarce in Yorkshire the majority of recordings being in the West Midlands,regarding Barrow in Furness, I have a record of a large Whittall family who moved there from the Dudley area.
