Hi
I haven't yet found proof of the Wellman family as Loyalists or late loyalists but they may have been.
I have seen theories that they were Hessians but no evidence for this either, at least as concerns the Middlesex Wellman group.
I do know there were Wellmans in Middlesex county Upper Canada circa 1824 so they may have been around during the war of 1812 but no evidence of this yet. I think there were several brothers who spread over the Michigan and Ontario border area circa 1820 after a stay in Trumbull county,Ohio in the area were Connecticutt people went(the Western Reserve and the Firelands areas).Zadock and George Wellman were in Trumbull county Ohio in 1807 and 1808.George is in Lobo township,MiddlesexCounty, Upper Canada by 1824 and Zadock was in Detroit 1820.Zadock's son Joel was in Oakland county Michigan as was a William Wellman circa 1820.George and William may have been sons of Zadock as he had four or five sons and at least three daughters as shown on the US censuses from 1800 and 1820.
If you have evidence of the Wellmans as Loyalists I would be very interseted in learning more. If you have any questions I would be happy to try to correspond with any and all. Thanks. Bruce
