I have been checking on these families for only two days and have already decided the same fsmily is spelled at least in the above three ways.
Elisha, probably the "long hunter" was in Montgomery County, Virginia ca 1790.
By 1810-20, these heads of family appear on tax lists or censuses in Lee and Scott Counties, Virginia : Elisha, Jesse, James Sr. and Jr, John Sr. and Jr, Joseph. George, James and Lucy were on 1830. 1795 Lee tax list had Mathew, Joseph, John, Thomas.
By 1825, many of the same nasmes appear in White County, Tenn. : Daniel, James Sr and Jr, Jesse, John, Joseph, Thomas./ There in 1811 were Elisha, John, Joseph amnd Thomas. All Walling.
In 1799 Grainger County, Tenn was Elisha Wallen, Jr.
I started this all with a Thomas R. Walling ("Wallier" on the census as copied) )in 1850 Lawrence County, Arkansas from White County, Tenn born in Vas, married to Charity.
More complete data upon request.
You likely know there is a separate message board for "Wallen".
