Dear BJ --
I don't have answers to all your questions, but perhaps the following notes that I have on James Walling might be of some assistance. The second note below does show "Fine" rather than "Pine." I'm not sure if I made a mistake transcribing or if the marriage compiler made a mistake or if the newspaper made a mistake. In any event, sounds as if you have several pieces of info to the effect that it should be "Pine" rather than "Fine." Sorry, but I've never researched any members of the Pine family.
Now a request: Do you happen to have the citations (page #s or other identifying info) for the state censuses to which you refer with the Walling households. I'd love to take a look at them when I'm in Salt Lake. I know that the NY state censuses are terrific.
!CENSUS: 1850 U.S. Census, Delaware Co NY; 1850; Town of Franklin, Sheet 47, HH283/300; Lines 17-23; LDS Film 017070; NOTE: In Hh headed by Alexander Walling he is 7th person listed--James H. Walling, 7, m, b NY, school w/i yr.
!MARRIAGE: Compiler, Millie Cowen, Marriages taken from the Delhi [i.e. Delaware] Gazette, published at Delhi, Delaware County, N.Y.; LDS Film 0860311; Vol. 2, p 94; NOTE: From issue of September 19, 1866, "Christ Church, Walton, 11th inst. by Rev. Mr. Huntington, James H. Walling of Deposit to Hannah Fine of Walton."
