Dear Julia,

Yes, it seems strange that my great grandmother, Carrie M. WALLIN, is living in MI, with a Van Nostrand family & the book is written by a Wallin with a family member with a Van Nostrand/Van Ostrand.

Carrie M. & Mary Ann WALLIN are daughters of Joseph & Susannah (Cook) WALLIN of England, who came to NY about 1845, Carrie was born in 1847 & orphaned and lived with Benj. & Susan Van Ostrand/Van Ostrand, this is their family:

BENJAMIN VAN NOSTRAND,3 (WILLIAM VAN NORTHSTRAND2, WILLIAM VAN NOSTRAND1), was born March 04, 1793
in Johnstown, New York, and died April 13, 1876 in Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan. He married SUSANNA CROCKER on September 18, 1815 in Johnstown.

Benjamin and Susanna moved around New York State quite a bit, (as did their children) as shown by the birth locations of their children:

Their first child, Permilia Van Nostrand was born on October 09, 1816 in Euriskany, Herkimer County, NY. She married Jesse Wade and died on February 26, 1861, Albion, Calhoun County, Michigan.

Their second child, Dr. Henry Van Nostrand was born October 21, 1818 in Ulysus, Thompkins County, NY. He also traveled. At the time of his death, at age 84, Henry died on December 23, 1902 in Yankton, Yankton Co. South Dakota. On the SD GenWeb site he is listed in a book about Historic homes:

Yankton, D. T." by Dorothy Jencks (1974). This index

Van Ostrand Henry (Dr.) pg. # 15

Per Albion Public Library:
Dr. Henry Van Ostrand born Oct 21, 1818 in Ulysses, Tompkins County, NY, died Dec 23, 1902 in Yankton, SD. Came to Albion 1856 moved to Yankton in 1885. Dr. VanOstrand leaves a wife, two sons and 2 daughters. He was a Civil War Surgeon and operated a drug store here following the War. There was a migration of about 200 residents of Albion to the Dakota Territory in 1885 and Dr. Van Ostrand was one of them. Henry was married to Rozella Howell on Nov 4, 1868.

In 1821, Philomelia Van Nostrand was born to Benjamin and Susanna, also in Tompkins County. Philomelia died before 1840.

Wiliam VanOstrand March 15, 1824 (age 46) is listed in the 1870 MI Census with his wife Adaline Merriam is her maiden name (age 40) & son, *Seymour, 16 & daughter, Zena, age 5.

*Seymour testified in 1890 Government records that Carrie M. Wallin lived with his grandparents, Benj. & Susan VanOstrand. Benj. & Susan are listed on the same 1870 MI Census in Sheridan Township, Albion, MI. below William, "Adelyne", Seymour & Zena.

Here is the 1880 Census inf.
1880 MI Census LDS site records them & so does 1870 MI Census.

In the 1870 Albion, MI census, Benj. (age 77) & Susan Van Ostrand (77) are living close to their son, William (age 46) & his wife Adelyne (age 40) & grandchildren, Seymour (age 16, so may be a first wife, Nancy)) & Lena (age 5).

Carrie M. Wallin is in Cayuga County, NY with Mary Ann WALLIN Christian & Horace John Christian.

All very perplexing.

Thank you for looking, again.
