I'm just now looking into my WALLEN/WALDEN side of the family. I have very limited info on this side and am flying a little blind with researching it. My 2nd great-grandfather, Jesse Walden, was born abt. 1865 in MO, probably Barry County. He married LaDora Ann Wilhite Dec 21, 1892 in Carroll County, AR. It looks like per the 1910 census Dora was his 2nd wife. The family frequently went back & forth over the Arkansas-Missouri line. His oldest son, Willie, was born March 14, 1896 in Seligman, Barry Co., MO.
After Willie's birth the family settled in Eureka Springs, Carroll County, AR. Jesse was a stone cutter by trade & used those skills to work on both the Crescent & Basin Park Hotels in that town. He developed a lung problem from years of breathing stone dust & was forced to find an alternative profession to support his family. He became a professional gambler at the Basin Park Hotel. Locals called him the "Stone Faced Indian", it's said his mother was full Cherokee. Jesse & Dora had 5 children that we know of, 4 living to adulthood. They were as follows:
Willie Elijah (changed to Edgar) Walden, Ludy Walden, Ina Walden, Annie Walden, & Baby Harry Walden who passed away at approx. 2 years old.
Jesse passed away sometime before 1913, it's said, from the lung problem. Dora went on to marry for a second time to John E. Kettner.
As of now I believe my Jesse Walden is the 15 year old Jesse Wallen listed in the household of his uncle John Wallen on the 1880 Cedar Twp., Carroll County, AR census.
It reads as follows:
Wallen, John, head of household, 52 yrs old, born in TN, farmer
Martha, wife, 48 yrs old, TN TN TN
Frances J., daughter, 17 yrs old, MO TN TN
John W., son, 13, AR TN TN
William, son, 1? (age illegible), AR TN TN
Jesse B., nephew, 15 yrs old, MO TN TN
From what I've found it looks like the above John Wallen is the son of Jesse & Susanah Wallen both born in TN who migrated to the White River area of Barry County, MO. From census records it seems they had 4 sons them being: Simpson, John, Jesse, & James. Obviously, because my Jesse was listed as "nephew" in the household of John, my Jesse would be a son of one of his brothers, either Simpson, Jesse, or James.
As of now this is a working theory. If anyone out there has more info on these Wallen brothers I'd appreciate hearing from you. We're at a stand still until we can figure it out. As i said any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much,
