In hindsight, we lost 58,000 plus in Vietnam, and it is now ruled by the communists we were trying to defeat. On the other side of the coin, Vietnam is becoming a trading partner and has no designs (that anyone knows of) on spreading its brand of Communism anywhere.
So maybe in the short run, a defeat, in the long run, a wash (politically).
At any rate, a huge waste of lives on both sides.
