Randall,
There has been a host of people purporting to be Vietnam Veterans. If you did not serve in Vietnam, or off the coast of Vietnam, you are not a Vietnam Veteran. You are a Vietnam Era Veteran. As to the aforementioned people, I will only list two who lied about their Vietnam service.
1. Ex congressman Robert Dornan, He always implied he was, but, he is a liar of the worst kind, using that lie to get elected to congress. He is reprehensible!!
2. Actor Brian Dennehy, he never served in Vietnam, even for a minute! He still uses that lie to this day. The Book "Stolen Valor" by E. J. Burkett, documents his lie.
There are many more, but you get the idea.
Vietnam Vets were dumped on long enough, now that we're the flavor of the month, everyone wants in.
Hope this clears things up for you.
