Alexander Buchanan was born December 4, 1752. He married Rachel Van Schooyck
(born March 9, 1752) on February 24, 1772 in the Aquackanank Dutch Reformed Church in Passaic, New Jersey. They had 11 children (Jacob-Nov. 9, 1773; Joseph-January 26,
1775; Jean April 6, 1776; Reuben, April 2, 1778; Levi-August 27, 1779; Martha-March 10, 1781;
Simon-November 28, 1782 - died in infancy; Rachel-May 28, 1784; Nancy-February 7, 1786;
Simon-January 30, 1789; and Benjamin-December 9, 1790).

Louisa's grandfather was their second son, Joseph Buchanan, born January 26, 1775 in New
York City, New York. He married Jane Taylor from Virginia. Their children were Mary; Alexander
February 14, 1796; Benjamin; Rachel, who married John Johnson; Thurza, a daughter; Reuben;
Levi; Reuben; Amanda; Green Berry; Damaris; Unknown. Joseph was a farmer and powder mill
owner. He was also a Baptist minister. He is buried in Morgan County, Illinois.

Louisa's father, Alexander Buchanan, was born February 14, 1796 in Kentucky. He was married
to Delilah Duncan, born November 20, 1806 in Kentucky. They had 9 children - Louisa (married to
Daniel Watkins)-August 15, 1824; Nancy-April 8, 1827; William Taylor-January 7, 1829; Joseph
Rick-November 26, 1830; James Henry-September, 1832; Julyanna-August 7, 1835; Martin Van
Buren-April 9, 1837-June 20, 1850; Sidney Smith-April 17, 1841 (died at the Confederate Home
at Austin, Texas); and Emily Amanda-September 1843.

Julyanna and William Watkins had four children: James Albert-September 21, 1855; Sarah
Emily-February 12, 1857; Robert Ashley-March 3, 1859 (died May 3, 1865 when he was 10 years
old), and John Alexander-February 6, 1861.

Julyanna Buchanan Watkins died June 25, 1862 and William Watkins died February 25, 1867. Both
are buried in the Buchanan Cemetery near Randolph, Texas. The cemetery was created when
Alexander Buchanan died September 28, 1845 and was the first to be buried there. Willison Reed
Watkins (younger brother of William) and Julyanna's mother raised the children after their death.
