Other than the SS Death Index which is online, you will probably have to obtain his death certificate from the state:

Birth and Death Certificates (through the Virginia Department of Health)
All records of births and deaths in Virginia are maintained by the Virginia Department of
Health's Office of Vital Records in Richmond. You may call their office at (804) 662-6200, or download the state "Application for Certification of a Vital Record" and mail to:

Mailing Address:
Virginia Department of Health
Office of Vital Records
P.O. Box 1000
Richmond, VA 23218-1000 Street Address (as of 5/31/11):
Virginia Department of Health
Office of Vital Records

Richmond, VA 23230

Each copy of a certificate or search of a vital record will cost $12.00, payable to the "State Health Department".

NOTE: PLEASE ALLOW DELIVERY TIME OF 3 WEEKS FOR AN AUTOMATED SEARCH, AND 7-8 WEEKS FOR A MANUAL SEARCH.

An expedited search service offered through VitalChek is also offered by the State to process
and Fed Ex copies of certificates within 2 to 5 days. This service cost $46.00 per record request. Please call (877) 572-6333, or visit http://www.vdh.virginia.gov/vital_Records/rush.htm for additional information.
