According to an online VA marriage index Martha's father was Edmund and John's parents were Tivis and Margaret. (See below). However, if one goes to the 1880 Scott County, VA census one finds Edmund R. Gilliam and wife Mary with daughter Martha J., age 9. (This Edmund is the only Edmund Gilliam found in the census). So either Martha lied about her age on her marriage certificate or Edmund and Mary's daughter Martha born 1871, died and they had in 1881 another daughter whom they named Martha in honor of the one that died. However, given Edmund's age and Mary's age of 55 (note child-bearing years) I doubt Mary had another daughter named Martha J. in 1881.

Also, according to the 1880 Scott County, VA Census, John's parents were Tivis Burdine Marcum and Margaret Moore. They are listed with a son John, age 5.

It also seems that John was also older than what is recorded below. Age 5 would make him born about 1875.
