I acquired the following two paragraphs. The first paragraph does not seem to agree with what I have until now seen, and the official descriptions of the Virginia parished do not have Lawne’s Creek Parish ever in Isle of Wight Co. Is this first paragraph true ? Was there a boundary that was “fixed” at some point so that all of Lawne’s Creek became in Surry Co ? Is it true that Southwark covered 90% of Surry Co ?
Lawnes Creek was a very small parish, composed of a sliver of eastern Surry plus a sliver of western Isle of Wight. It was roughly half Surry and half Isle of Wight. The other 90% of Surry County was covered by Southwarke Parish.
Technically, they both extended from the James River to the NC border, but for many years most of the land south of the Blackwater, near the NC border was Indian reservations, and was forbidden to white settlers and no patents could be obtained in that area until 1701.
