Question about Albemarle Parish record - Godparents???
Posted by: karen (ID *****5221) Date: December 14, 2005 at 10:34:03
From the REGISTER of ALBEMARLE PARISH / SURRY CO and SUSSEX CO, VA (1739-1778)
John and Sarah Stokes had Sarah b. 9 Nov c. 6 Dec 1761
.....gdpts. NATHANIEL HOLT, MARY EZELL, ELIZA STOKES
"gdpts." = What is this an abbreviation for??
At first glance, I took it to mean grandparents.
Because there were consistently only three names for the "gdpts", it was curious why, at no time, was there ever FOUR gdpts listed for the Christened child. More times than not, children have FOUR living grandparents when they're born.
All of the other entries for the other children being born also had only three gdpts. each, with no exception.
Could gdpts mean GODPARENTS instead of GRANDPARENTS??
There were other children for this couple, John and Sarah Stokes, in the Albemarle Parish records, and the gdpts for each of their other children had different name.
Does anyone know if it was the practice back then to sometimes enter the names of Godparents in Christening records? I had never come across that before.
It is Nathaniel Holt who is my person of interest. I couldn't find his name anywhere in family charts for the Stokes or Ezell families in Virginia.
I would appreciate your input about the gdpts.
