What a coincidence that you responded to both of the messages I posted! The guy who got the land patent on Mudlick Run was no relation to the Croft I wrote about!

I went to Google Earth & found Mudlick Road and the Roanoke River nearby so I have an idea of the location of Mudlick Run. Here's a description of the land from the 1747 patent -- as best I could make it out! I thought the mention of an iron mine and a still (I think!), and a steep hill especially interesting!

on the west side of the Blue Ridge on a Branch of Roanoke ??? Mudlick Run and
bounded as followeth to wit Beginning at a Black Oak on a Hill on the west
side of the said Run and running thence north twenty? four degrees west eighty poles to
a pine on a Hill thence north thirytwo poles to three White Oaks growing out of
one root thence east fifty poles crossing?? the Run to two White Oaks on the side of a
Hill thence north fifty two degrees east?? two hundred and forty poles to a White Oak
and Black Oak thence south thirtyeight degrees east eighty poles between a White
Oak and Black Oak near an Iron mine north fifty two degrees east forty poles to
a White Oak thence south thirty eight degrees east eighty poles to two White Oaks on
a still by a pond thence south fifty two degrees west three hundred and sixty poles to two
White Oaks and a pine on the side of a Steep hill on the South side of Mudlick Run
thence to the beginning WITH all woods underwoods Swamps ?? Low
grounds Meadows Goodings?? and his and Share of all iron? Mines and Quarries
as ?? discovered or not discovered within the Bounds aforesaid . . .

My aunt used to live in the general vicinity (Maiden Lane, then Persinger Road) so I'm somewhat familiar with th area, but will also check out the Museum.
Thanks so very much for your help!
