The NC Marriage Bonds records show that he married Polly Shelton in September 1862, after his first wife (alternately spelled Betty and Betsie) had died. Not only did he marry at such a late age, according to the 1870 Census for Stokes Co., NC, Gardner Stevens, age 93 and wife Polly, age 30, have two daughters, Elizabeth, age 5, and Martha, age 2. I have been informed that John H. Stephen's mother was Sallie Stephens, who was living with his in-laws in the 1860 census, two houses down from Gardner Stephens and his first wife, so if this information is correct, Gardner Stephens would not be the father of John H. Stephens. I still think all these Stephens in Stokes and Rockingham Co., NC, who all originated from Virginia, were somehow related.
