Notes for JOHN "JACK" P. SMITH:

Civil War: John "Jack" P. Smith fed deserters from both the Confederate and Union Armies. He also taught his slaves how to read. He came to not believe in slavery. As the Civil War neared it's close his activities became known to members of the Virginia Home Guard. The Home Guard and Neighbors advanced on the Smith Plantation. They fired and Jack Smith slumped to the ground dying an hour later. Dr. Bart Smith was shot and died instantly. Joe Smith was shot through the knee but recovered.
