Betty,

I am researching this family and would be happy to share information with you.

My ancestor is Thomas and Nancy's son Augustus, born 1796. I have been unable to trace Thomas' line back beyond him, but do have some information on Thomas and Nancy's children and on Augustus' line.

Nancy last shows up on the 1850 census with three grandchildren (Burton's) living with her. Thomas died in about 1823. In researching land records I find that he owned about 2200 acres in Buckingham county on the Slate River. In 1838 620 acres of this land went to Nancy W. Guerrant (whom I believe was a daughter), sold by James Cobbs. Augustus is on the 1860 census.

There were two other Thomas Cobbs in Buckingham County at the same time as this Thomas. One lived in the Rock Island Creek area. Thomas and Nancy also had a son, Thomas, Jr. who bought 386 AC on Slate River from the estate of Thomas Cobbs.

My ancestor and his son kept the "s" on Cobb until about 1900 except for two sons, Jacob Levi Cobb and J N B Cobb. These two sons (of Augustus) went to Georgia about the middle of the 19th century, and they dropped the "s".
