ORDER OF COUNTY FORMATION DATES:
Charles City County, an original Shire was formed in 1634; Prince George County was formed from Charles City County in 1703.
Brunswick County was formed in 1732 from Prince George County.
Lunenburg County was formed in 1746 from Brunswick County. and Greensville County was formed in 1781 (not 1861), also from Lunenburg County, not from Surry and Isle of Wight Counties.
Surry County was formed in 1652 from James City County, and encompassed the area on the south side of the James River. In 1754 Sussex County was formed from Surry County. And it was Sussex County, not Surry County, that ceded land to Greensville County sometime after its formation in 1781.
