There were two John Adkins born 16 months apart in Albemarle Parish, Sussex Co., VA, both with mothers named Lucy. Thus there were at least two Mrs. Lucy Adkinses there in the mid-1760s.
+ John Adkins, b. 14 Feb 1764, son of Thomas Adkins-Lucy; c. 16 March 1764; godparents John, William, Betty Harrison. (Dr. Gertrude R. Richards, Register of Albemarle Parish, Surry and Sussex Cos., VA, 1739-1778, 97)
+ John Adkins, b. 18 June 1765, son of Joseph Adkins-Lucy; c. 28 Aug 1765; godparents William Hewitt, Edward and Sarah Slate. (Ibid.)
You seldom find in the Register all three godparents with the same surname, as with the Harrisons. That strongly suggests that either the mother or the father, more likely the mother, had close ties to the Harrisons. A search of the index for Lucy Harrison found:
+ Lucy Harrison, b. 4 Sep 1741, Albemarle Parish, Surry Co., VA, daughter of John Harrison-Susanna. [Note above that one of the godparents of the first John Adkins was a John Harrison.] Lucy was c. 28 Nov 1741; godparents William Willie, Mary Edmonds, John Harrison. (Ibid., 32)[William Willie was the rector of Albemarle Parish and kept the Register from 1738 to 1776. His successor, William Andrews, made few entries and rode off to join the British army when Cornwallis marched through Virginia in 1781.]
A Lucy Harrison was godmother with John Jones and Mary Hancock 23 May 1756 for Fanny, b. 30 Sep 1755, daughter of David Hines and Christian. (Ibid., 23) Lucy, b. in 1741, would have been old enough to serve as godmother in 1756, but there may have been an older Lucy Harrison in Albemarle Parish.
There are many entries in the Register (and in other Surry and Sussex records)for other John and Thomas Adkinses. The Register has an unusual format, recording each child by given name. One thus can check all of the L sections for girls named Lucy. Albemarle Parish was in Surry Co., VA until 1752, when it was split off into Sussex.
