According to a list compiled by Robert L Bailey, which he states he took from Mexican War - Volunteer Tennessee Fourth Infantry, Microfilm Copy 638, Rolls 10 and 11, William L Childress enlisted in 1847 and fought in the Mexican War with Company C, 4th Infantry. He was from Roane County, TN at time of enlistment. Was married to Minerva Bowling in 1839 and they had two children: James K Childress, b. 1842, and Mary Eliza T Childress, b. 1848. Because he does not appear on any census from 1850 and forward, and because Minerva Bowling Childress remarries in 1850 to John H Brient, I suspect William Childress died from injuries or disease during this war. I have been unable to find proof in a book or online list definitively confirming he was indeed a soldier in the Mexican War, or what became of him. I descend through Mary Eliza Childress and he was my gggggrandfather. Any help with information, or with steering me to sources would be greatly appreciated.
