Google 1840's transportation. He could have gone by walking, riding a horse/mule, by wagon pulled by horses or oxen, railroad or steam/paddle boat across Lake Erie and/or Lake Michigan probably a combination of any of the above. I googled "1840's Lake Erie" and found this website. http://www.michiganrailroads.com/RRHX/Timeline/1840s/TimeLine1840.htm Probably trveled down the Mississippi River (upper MS, joins Ohio River then Lower MS)to get to Mexican War.
