John S. Watts father was Richard Watts b. 1758 probably Culpeper Co., VA. The people researching his family have decided that he was one of the very large family of Watts and DNA studies of a descendent showed that this Watts family most likely came from Somerset, England. There are several family stories that the descendents of Richard Watts and his wife Sarah Stubblefield were part Cherokee and we have some evidence for this in their descendents. Current thinking is that Richard was a son of William Watts. Richard had brothers William, Peter and Gideon and a sister Eleanor. The brothers migrated together to Wilkes Co., NC then on to Washington and Mercer Co., KY. Gideon and William were trappers and traders, Peter was a lawyer.
I've looked online at 'Trader John' Watts' descendents and wondered if Richard Watts was connected but there is no evidence for this as yet.
