I hope by now someone has answered your question off line or you have found it. In the meantime I will let you know what I have determined. Families were notified with letters of the death of soldiers. I was able to obtain a copy from the National Archives. My ancestor's widow wrote for his pension for their children thus NARA had this document in his file. This couple was from Champaign Co, Ohio but he enlisted with the 1st Michigan volunteers. Why I don't know. He enlisted January 1847 and died in June at Vera Cruz, Mexico from malaria. Did you find your veteran? Hamilton County is so large. Your search may be more complicated than mine. Good luck.
