James P. Henderson the son of Lawson Henderson and Elizabeth
Carruth. He was born Licolnton, North Carolina March 31, 1808. He studied at the University of North Carolina and admitted to the bar in 1829. In 1835 he became interested in the Texas revolution and began enlistment of volunteers
for Texas Service. Arrived at Velasco Texas June 3, 1836
and was commissioned by David G. Burnett as Brigadier General and sent to the United States to recruit for the Texas Army. James P. Henderson organized a company in Lincolnton, North Carolina with the help of John B. Harry (1835 Linclonton County State Senator) and ask John B. Harry to coduct them to Texas by October 1, 1836. The volunteers arrived after the battle of San Jacinto. James P. Henderson arrived back in Texas November 1836 and was appointed Attorney General of the Republic under Sam Houston. On December 1836 succeeded Stephen F. Austin as Secretary of State. Elected Governor of Texas November 1845 and took office February 1846. Upon the declaration of the Mexican war took command of the Second Texas Regiment at the battle of Monterrey, returned to private practice 1847.
