Yes, the duplicate children are most definitely appearing twice in the index.
I am even closing the program down and re-opening, just in case they are phantoms (as someone else somewhere else suggested). They're still there.
Obviously I am using a copy of my client's database (not her original)
Re the confusion with Dion ... Before the merge, there are 2 instances of Michelle (the mother, and the one I am trying to merge). She has 2 children, Heidi and Dion. In the first instance, the child Dion is single. In the 2nd, he is married. Obviously I want to keep the instance with the most data, ie the one where he is married. But seeing as I'm merging the mother, Michelle, the data of the son is not shown to me as options to select (preferred, alternate or delete etc).
On the other hand, the daughter Heidi has been married twice, and has children to each husband.
Just noticed also, when checking the Relationships of Michelle, that she also had 2 spouses, with both spouses listed as ongoing, which can't be correct. Even though one of them has a death date, I don't have marriage dates for either of them to know which came first. Will have to ask my client.
Could this have something to do with it?
The plot thickens.
