Most "Fly Boys" first flew for the French in their Aero units. When U.S. joined the war they were "U.S. Army Aero Squadrons"

(scroll down to near bottom, newspaper article "U.S. Aero Squadron Organization" )

The U.S. Navy and Coast Guard Aero Units were still experimenting and mostly using lighter than air craft for sea coast protection. The first true aircraft carriers were not built till after 1920.
