I seek information on the branch of the Ure faily that included Charles William Ure, born c1860 in Scotland, died in 1923 in Shanghai. He was a merchant banker in the Orient. He had two sisters, Jessie Graham Ure and Isabella Jane (Ure) Bryant, a brother James and, I think, another brother George. From 1911 until it was destroyed in the great Berkeley fire of 1923 the two sisters ran a hotel or student residence, called Braemar, near the University of California campus. Vida Catherine French Ure, Charles Ure's second wife, b. 1880, d. 1974, was my aunt, and she left a trove of fasinating papers, but there are gaps in the story of her husband's family. It appears that most or perhaps all of the siblings settled in Northern California. Why? An example of what I'd like to know. Many thanks. Bill Allen |
