Hyphenated surnames occurred when a noble/schlachta woman married down from her social status. It was common for both her and her husband to use this double-barreled name. This was done so as not to diminish the social status of the woman and to gain for her husband a higher social status.
Researching these surnames can be tricky. I do know someone in Vohlyn, who can probably be helpful to your research. Rates are very fair and he comes w/exc references. email@example.com
