When you search census records, what source are you using? I use Heritage Quest because my local libary subscribes to it (only libraries can) and it is free to me and I can use it on my computer at home.

I'm a little hesitant in giving this information to you because it is "NOT" proven. Name of Webb helps and continuing occupation of gunsmith also helps, but you need to do more research to make sure these are yours.

1850 census St Helena Parish, LA:

Blackman, E., 63, b NY - gunsmith
" Octavia, 40, b LA [older daughter or second wife?]
" Charles, 16, b LA
" Z., 8, b LA [Zachariah]
" M.C.,. 5, b LA

1860 census Catahoula Parish, LA:

Blackman, E.S., 73, b Conn - blk smith - no land/pers $200
" Octavo, 51, b LA (female)
" Zachariah, 18, b LA - gunsmith
" Marion, 15, b LA (male)

1870 census De Soto Parish, LA:

Blackman, Zack, 28, b La - gunsmith - no land/personal $200
" Mary, 24, b MS
" Webb, 5, b LA [John Webb]
" William, 2, b LA
" Marion, 1, b LA
[note Zachariah has a brother named Marion and he names a son Marion]

1880 census Catahoula Parish, LA:

Blackman, Zack, 38, b LA
" Martha, 38, wf, b GA
" John W., 15, s, b LA [John Webb]
" William, 13, s, b AL
" Marion, 11, s, b LA
" Emma, 9, d, b LA
" Ida, 6, d, b LA
Kent, Eliza, 17, step/dau/ b LA
[note 1870 census, Mary was the first wife and for sure mother of Webb, William and Marion and maybe Emma and Ida. Eliza Kent is dau of Martha from previous marriage. Born about 1863, maybe her father died in the civil war????]

If you go to the Rootsweb's WorldConnect site -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi -- Enter Blackman, Zachariah, born 1842 + or - five years, others are working on this line also. But, source given is World Family Tree, which means it's just someone elses research, you need to find documents and records to "prove" this line. But they do have name for E.S. -- Elisha Swift Blackman. I'd watch for Swift and Webb as possible surnames in the family tree, also.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
