"The county was named for George T. Wood,qv governor of Texas from 1847 to 1849. In 1870 the new Rains County took a section of western Wood County." This is just a small sample of what you can find on the Handbook of Texas online -- http://www.tshaonline.org/ -- Just type in Wood County. First item gives a lot of information on the county, and down at the bottom sources are listed if you want more details. Then further down the list "QUITMAN, JOHN ANTHONY -- Quitman, the county seat of Wood County, Texas, is named for him." And, you can read up on just who he was and what he did. Happy Hunting (^_^) |
