Hi Madeline!
Not sure I can help you much, but I do have an idea.

I found Joe Thomas' death certificate on the Family Search site:
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?..#w=;p=2;c=1320964;t=searchable

It gives his social security number, which is in the railroad workers' series. You can request his social security application and it may give you a clue or 2 (it is suppose to have parents info). I don't find him in the Social Security Death index, but they may have messed up the last name (or just not have him. But with the number, you should be able to get the application.

If you need directions on how to get the application (and it will cost a little), check here.

I found Walla's all over Williamson Co, and while they were from Bohemia, they had been in Texas a while (10-15 years). Are they kin to Bessie?

By the way, I would not refer to it as Czechoslovakia, as that was not what it was called until much later. When she came over (and when he was born) it was Bohemia or Hungary or Austria, etc. etc. The Walla's in Williamson were originally from Bohemia.

One other thought...is this a Catholic or Protestant family? You might be able to find baptismal records, which might give a father's name.

Anyway, good luck on your journey!
Happy Hunting!
Andrea
