Brenda,

You should contact the Texas State Library and Archives located at:

1201 Brazos
PO Box 12927
Austin TX 78711-2927
main telephone - 512-463-5455
e-mail - info@tsl.state.tx.us

They should be able to provide a copy (for a small fee) of J. L. Bird's application to enter the Confederate Veterans Home. These applications contain a wealth of information about your ancestor.

Your J. L. Bird also made application for a Texas Confederate Veterans Pension. The application No. is 32983.
His widow may have remarried J. T. Riley. She made application for a widow's pension after J. T. bird's death. Her application No. is 38292. Both applications were filed from Erath County, Texas. Btw, it appears that J.T. Bird's first name may have been Jasper. You should request copies of both applications. For more information, check out this web site:

http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/arc/pensions/introcpi.html

J.L. bird was also buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. The cemetery is located at:

909 Navasota street
Austin, TX 78702
(512) 463-0605.

Check out this web site for information on J.L. Bird's civil war service & subsequent burial in the cemetery. The administrative office, located at the cemetery, may have additional information on J. L. Bird.

Hope this information is helpful.
