Betty, I cannot thank you enough for all the help you have been! I really appreciate you taking the time to do this for me.
I looked over what little information I already have about my dad's family. His death certificate says that his name is Roy Rowan Spicer, born in Texas on 14 Jan 1906. That his father's name is Marvin Spicer, born in Tx and his mother's name is Hattie Sanford, born in Tx.
My grandmother, Hattie Spicer's death certificate says that her full name is Hattie Sue Spicer, born 8 Feb 1884, in Texas. It has her father's name as William B. Samford, born in Virginia. I had thought that that was a misprint because I had heard that my grandmother's maiden name was Sanford. It has her mother listed as Mary Curtis, born in Tx.
Now the copy I have of the 1910 Census of Abilene, Texas has my grandfather listed as H. S. Spicer. Maybe the H. is really an M., I don't know. My mother is the one that told me that his name was Marvin and that my father was named Rowan Marvin Spicer. My father hated his name and called himself Roy Spicer. His headstone even says Roy Spicer.
My parents split up when I was only 8 years old and then we moved to Texas a few months after I turned 9. I never saw any of my Spicer relatives again and we only heard from my dad several times after that. I talked to his sister, Lillie a few times, but the only info I got was that my half sister had died about 5 years earlier in a car wreck. I never knew her married name so I didn't think that I would ever be able to locate anything on her. Her full name is Betty Rowan Spicer and she was born around 1937. Where, I have no idea and I do not know her mother's name. By accident I found her listed as the mother of Robert Allan Harrington, born in Wichita Co., Tx. and Rance Allan Obenchin, born in Taylor Co., Tx. when I was looking for information for my grandfather, Rowan Spicer.
This is about all the information that I have on my Spicer and Samford family. There is a Sam Spicer buried close by my father in the Lindsey Cemetery in Lindsey, Ca. He is probably related, but I never knew of him when I was a child.
I would love to have the real name of my dad's father and any information on the rest of the family as far back as I can find anything. And I would like more information on my sister, if possible. She came to visit us once when I was 5 years old and I can barely remember her. I have tried to find information on my own but haven't been very successful as you can see. I just don't know where to look or how to do research. I was really suprised that you came up with so much information in so short a time! I am slowly learning and hope to be able to catch on and do a lot of the research myself. Thanks for any help you can give me to get me started in the right direction.
