Is there a Family History Center near you? They can help you with the many things available on the FamilySearch site. That's where I viewed the TX Dth Idx, and you can view the digitized copy of those DCs, too. You need to register to view the copies, but it doesn't cost anything and there are no strings attached, they just have to be careful about people viewing the records. You've probably seen people posting on the forums trying sell non-genealogical stuff, and from time to time on Cyndi's List people post links to porn sites. So, you can see what I mean.

Does your local public library subscribe to Heritage Quest? If they don't check around and see if one near you does. You need a library card for that particular library to use Heritage Quest, but it's free and you can use it at home. They have all the federal censuses digitized, but not all are indexed at this time. Plus there are over 25,000 county histories and family history books that have been indexed. Just all kinds of things out there free, for now anyway.

Is there a genealogy society near you? Check with your public library, often they will know. Some offer classes and most are eager to help people learn about all the sources that are out there. Or, you can tell me what county you're in and I'll check for you.

Have you used GenWeb sites? Another one of my favorite free sites.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
