1. Joseph A.H. Welch (your ancestor) was not the same person as my Joseph Welch. Mine was born in 1831 in Mississippi and married Martha Brumley. Yours, I think, was born in 1844 and his wife's name was Leah (per Civil War Pension file).

2. I've just had a look at your Joseph A.H.'s Civil War record. It seems that he enlisted in Minden, Texas, on 10 May 1862. He was left in Rusk County on account of an illness, but was with the Confederate Army again later in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was discharged for disability.

I also reviewed what I thought to be my Joseph Welch's Civil War record. He enlisted in Henderson, Texas on 1 Mar 1862, in Co. F, 17th Cavalry. From a roll taken on 30 Jun 1862, he was absent, never to be seen again...

Unless the record I've been thinking was my Joseph is actually your Joseph. Here's how that would work:

He enlisted in March in Henderson in the Cavalry. He promptly disappeared (maybe something happened to his horse?) and then re-enlisted in Minden in May, this time in the Infantry.

That's just a hypothesis. The two Civil War records I've looked at could be the same man, or they could be two different men. At best, we've only established that there were two Joseph Welches in Rusk County, Texas.

Nevertheless, thank you for your response!
